Daniel 3:18 But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is one of the most famous in the Old Testament. Their mighty defiance of King Nebucannezar and their willingness to die to preserve the integrity of their faith is powerful.
I’m not sure I would have that strength in me. Staring down a terrible death like the three men did. But with the grace of God and my spirit strengthened by His, perhaps I am selling myself short.
This scene in the book of Daniel makes me think of a verse in Revelation:
Revelation 12:11 They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.
In Revelation we are told it is the loving sacrifice of our actions, even to the point of death, that is the true display to others that God is real.
Buying a meal for a homeless person, giving up a game console for a co-worker’s child, paying rent for a friend, driving a disadvantaged teen to a sports practice. Any action that costs us much and offers no material or social reward sings out loudly of God’s love.
