James 4: 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?
Most Christians know that as followers we are to turn away from the things of the world. When we say “the world” we of course mean sinful and selfish desires such as greed, lust, envy, judgment and many others.
When I think of following the ways of the world or of sin I tend to visualize death and destruction. I sin and something is destroyed in me or death occurs around me and then guilt builds.
Verse 5 makes me visualize something different this morning: heartbreak. When we sin and turn from Him, God’s heart breaks. He yearns jealously over the spirit He put in us, our attention our affections. I suppose it’s easy to forget the hesrtbreak aspect when you read scripture and hear verses relating to God’s wrath and anger often.
This morning I pray for God’s mercy. I don’t want His heart to break, I want to be close in a loving relationship with Him a relationship to expand my life rather than shrink it.
