Faith and Works

James 2: 18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?

As followers of Christ we are called to be better than the world we live in. Our works of selflessness, love and sacrifice are meant to be a daily testimony that God is alive, real and Lord of all. His love is shown in our works of service and sacrifice.

A simple striking point James makes in these verses is that simple faith is not enough. He argues that even demons beileve in God and know His word, so we need to set ourselves apart! Where we are to shine as an example is in the way we act. What is the name we are making for ourselves out in our jobs? in public? with our friends? in our homes?

Do our actions make others stop to wonder where our goodness is coming from? Or do our actions make non-christians think: “gross, I don’t want anything to do with them or their God.”

I pray we continue to be a shining light of hope in the darkness that surrounds us!
