Many people who are not followers of Christ hinge God’s character on the existence of evil around us. Saying: “If God is so good, why is there so much evil?” They can at times take their argument further and claim there is no God at all based on the existence of evil. I won’t dive into deep apologetics but the argument made me think of two images: one is a bowl of M&Ms the other is a lake of fish.
Now first off just because God has not rid the world of all evil doesn’t mean he won’t ever do it, its just that is has not happened yet. I think many non-christians think of evil being removed from earth is like a bowl of M&Ms… all God simply needs to do is pick out the red ones and presto evil is gone. Its not that simple. That is because we all contribute to the evil in this world in God’s eyes, more than we tend to think we do. We lie, we are greedy, we cheat and steal. So rather than a bowl of M&Ms the world is more like a lake filled with fish and the water, its contaminated with posion. Now the only solution is to drain the lake of all its water as the posion (evil) is now spread everywhere and to refill it. But there’s a problen: the fish. They are still living in the lake and will die if it is empty so now here’s where God comes in, he wants to save the fish one by one bringing them to Him and put them in a new much better lake that doesn’t have this poison. That’s how I see evil. God’s own sacrifice through Christ on the cross made the rescue possible. The only way to deal with it is to wipe the slate clean, as God has himself said:
Revelation 21: 6 The One on the throne said to me, “It is finished. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give free water from the spring of the water of life to anyone who is thirsty. 7 Those who win the victory will receive this, and I will be their God, and they will be my children. 8 But cowards, those who refuse to believe, who do evil things, who kill, who sin sexually, who do evil magic, who worship idols, and who tell lies—all these will have a place in the lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
God will make the earth new, keeping the earth broken for now so that as many of us can be saved in the time we are alive on earth
2 Peter 3: 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
I can’t think of a more loving act, than to patiently wait for all souls to be given every chance at their salvation. I am eternally grateful for mine. We of course have to willingly choose this path, working everyday to keep it in our hearts and to live a life in line with Christ’s example.
